Microfinance operations at Women's Association for Advancement (WAFA) were initiated in 2008 through the Peer Lending Circles Project funded by Women's Empowerment International Foundation (WEIF). WEIF is a Canadian charity with the vision to empower women in the Northern Areas of Central and South Asia to achieve gender equality and alleviate povertyThey have expanded to project to a total of 20 lending circles reaching 100 borrowers in Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. WAFA is aiming to ahiceve financial independence for the women of Gilgit-Baltistan, acting as a conduit for monitoring and establishing support mechanisms through its staff to ensure training and ongoing support to the women.  In early 2011, they began implementing Mifos independently with support from the community via the Mifos mailing lists.
